Bibs for the baby. Or the cats?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Baby bibs are fun and easy to make, if you like to sew, or feel like a little adventure!

Pirate Cat Bib
1) They take less than 30 min per bib (that means you can do it while the baby is actually taking a nap).

2) You can start using those fat quarters you have stashed about (they are way to addictive to buy, I can’t seem to leave any fabric store without one or two).

3) They are super easy to personalize (either with fabric ink, stamps, or appliques).

4) They make great gifts for your favorite little people! Or if you feel like tormenting  your feline friends (like Charlotte above, sporting the pirate bib).

Here are a couple (front & back)I made recently for a baby friend. I love the pattern from Bend the Rules Sewing by Amy Karol, it’s also easy to adapt for a front buttoning bib (which I don’t have pictured, but have made for Etta). As you can tell, I don’t really use the “pattern” in the traditional sense, I use it as an idea… and let the scissors do their own thing (which often makes for a bit more funky & non symmetrical bib)!

Some Sun Gold’s

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

We only planted two tomato variety’s this year (1 each),Sun Gold’s & Cherry Tomatoes. Both have had awesome yields so far! Yesterday, after picking a bowl full tomato’s I decided to roast them up (cause there was no way I could eat that many fresh ones, and Sun Gold’s don’t make the best salsa).  I didn’t dream this idea up myself either, last week I found a fun new blog that talked about just how good Sun Gold’s are roasted (http://www.MakeGrowGather.com)! So, I thought what the heck, let’s give it a try! Here is the before roasting picture (can you find the green one that made it in by accident? Ooops).

about to be oven roasted tomatoes

They were amazing!! In just 4 short hours, I had delicious morsels of Sun Gold goodness! Henceforth, the lack of after picture! They are soooo sweet, chewy, roastie good (note: apparently roastie/roasty isn’t a word… to bad)!

In the middle of the tomato roasting festival, I also preped some pie dough, and then made a late night dinner quiche! Yum Yum Yum…. Oven Roasted Sun Gold’s with Leeks and Cheve Goat Cheese… Can’t beat that!

Giant Zucchini

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

When life gives you zucchini, make zucchini bread? We arrived home from our whirlwind tour of Austin, TX on Monday afternoon. There was a GIANT surprise waiting for us in the garden, two giant zucchini, one so giant that it made the smaller, but still huge zucchini look puny.

Next time we take a vacation out of town, gotta remember to have someone check the zucchini plant!

Now, I have to find a good zucchini bread recipe! The image above shows the zucchini with a large garlic bulb…. and below, with a large 9 month old baby (and I must say, after holding both, they felt around equal in weight!).Zucchini Baby

Up up and away!

Friday, August 21st, 2009

We’re off, on a fun filled vacation in Austin Texas! I was way more worried than I should have been about the whole airplane & baby scenario. As it turns out, she is an excellent baby passenger, perhaps the only on the leg to Austin that didn’t scream once (there was a 3 year old & a 6 month old in the row behind us, both had 5+ minute scream-a-thon’s which were quite painful, Etta kept looking concerned, and tried to crawl up and over the seat to sooth the babes)!

We arrived promptly, and were shocked at the wall of humidity that hit once we walked off the plane (even though Austin’s currently experiencing a cool spell).

Cooling off in the pool is our top priority tonight!

Have a super weekend!

Meet Charlotte

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Charlotte
She’s lean, she’s mean, she’s a kitty power machine! She’s my Charlotte! Ain’t she a beauty (photo by Colton Allen)?

How did we meet, well, here’s the backstory. My mom is VERY allergic to cats! Dogs okay… but cat’s… no good! So, growing up we never had a cat, kitten or any type of feline friend (other than my grandma’s cats, who we’re outdoor cats). So, the first thing I did upon moving away from home, was get my very own kitten! She was free, from a nice lady in downtown Eugene, with a box full of kittens. Charlotte was the runt. It was LOVE at first sight. I snuck her onto the Eugene City bus in my hoodie sleeve and we rode on home!

She’s been with me ever since!

There’s a reason it’s called Sunset Bay

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Friday afternoon, we packed our bags, bought some marshmallows and headed for the Oregon Coast!

Destination Sunset Bay!

Driving with a baby is always a little anxiety producing, will she sleep, will she fuss, please don’t cry…. etc…etc… But she did great and we had a fabulous drive (although we did take a slight detour).

We met up with some friends (C, T & Baby!), and had a fabulous time… even managed to catch the sunset on Saturday night, and it was amazing… as you can see.

A tiny tote

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

I don’t know how, but the smaller things are the cuter they are.

Take this tiny tote for example.

I snuck into my office/crafty room on Sunday and sewed this little tote up. The pattern is from “Sew what Bags!”.

It’s a hit with Etta, especially if it’s filled with her favorite toys!

A thought on blogs

Friday, August 7th, 2009

A thought on blogs.

I love to read them, especially the crafty ones with great ideas and inspiration.

So, after much thought, I’ve decided to leap into the blogging world. I’ve toyed with it previously (my website homepage has been a “updates” area that I’ve periodically have updated) but am now ready to commit myself!
What am I going to blog about? Well, we’ll just have to see, my favorite things are

1) Family

2) Food

3) Crafting!

I plan on sharing all three here, in the days, weeks, months… who knows even years to come!
